Death Query Module Health Indicator Selection
OverviewDeath record data is composed of variables extracted from death certificates based on deaths that occur in the State of Hawaii as captured by the Hawaii State Department of Health, Office of Health Status Monitoring (OHSM). Death certificates contain important information about the person who died and the date, time, location and cause of death. Cause(s) of death are determined by a physician, advanced practice registered nurse, medical examiner or coroner, and are coded and processed in accordance International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). The ICD-10 codes are designed to promote international comparability in the collection, processing, classification and presentation of mortality statistics. This process yields a single select cause of death known as the underlying cause of death, which is presented here. Death data can be viewed by the place where the death happened (place of occurrence) or by the place of residence of the decedent (Hawaii location, Other US, or International).
In accordance with policies of the OHSM, Hawaii data excludes all death records with HIV/AIDS (ICD-10: B20-B24, R75 or Z21) as the underlying or a non-underlying cause. To protect the privacy of the deceased, cell size restrictions are applied when the numerator (number of deaths) is between 1 and 9.
